Novels on CD
Our Number one activity on long car rides is studying. Thankfully, my Seven and Five can read by themselves. However, my Four in particular does not have patience for extended trips, and he is not ready to read independently. I will read periodically, but it's not something I want to perform for ten hours! That is where books on CD come in. I borrow them from the library, save them in my CD holder, and reserve multiple copies of every book so all the big kids can follow along. I Also known to my Best Picture Books for Kids Pinterest plank and found that a huge stack of new-to-us publications to take along. (The hard part was keeping my children from studying them before the big trip!
Sticker Scenes
This Reusable sticker pad out of Melissa and Dog is totally awesome as is. But I wanted to locate a way to make it operate in the car. The scenes are too big for laps, and definitely for our small trays. So I decided to cut every scene in half and cut the decals into segments. Then each child can have a part of a spectacle along with a set of stickers to play. The scenes won't be as striking as they would be with the full sheets, but you can' t be choosy once you've got seven people jammed into a seven-passenger van.
We Are planning a very long drive this week. We are hitting the street before sunup and pushing until way past bedtime. As a survival strategy I've ready a giant collection of street trip activities for children. In Only a short while our family will be taking a road trip. A Quite loooong road excursion. As In, begin driving at 3 AM and reach our destination after 10 PM. With five kids ages 7 and below. And No, we don't have a DVD player in our van. This May sound a little mad, but seriously? Placing all seven people in a hotel room with a baby still waking up every two hours sounds a great deal crazier. So I have been operating at a building and collecting an assortment of activities to keep my team occupied for our big adventure.
Magnetic Pattern Block Activities
We Already have pattern blocks, but for this trip I bought a magnetic set of blocks so that the kids can use them in their baking sheets. I found the massive pattern block activities at PreKinders. I published a transportation, snowflake, and animals set. The children can every set a newspaper on their board and cover it using the magnetic cubes. I also printed the small set of designs out of Kelly's Kindergarten and jump them with a ring. (You will have to shrink her layouts before printing them if you'd like them small.) My older children can recreate these images onto their own boards.
Road Trip Printables
Hunted high and low for free street trip printables. These would be the best that I could find because not only are they from talented bloggers, they're also easy to download and print. The Beautiful road trip drawing drives (empty street and truck) are out of Picklebums. The Lovelyhand-drawn BINGO games are from Housing a Forest. The Simple and vibrant Road Trip BINGO is from This Reading Mama. For Kids who can read, Interstate BINGO is just another fun printable from This Reading Mama. My Seven and Five will delight in this one. The Car Scavenger Hunt is out of a giant collection of road excursion printables out of 123Homeschool4Me.
